The purpose of this document is to give you some idea of the setting you’ll be playing your character in. The intent is to provide the broad strokes, and allow you to dig deeper, if you so desire, or zoom in on certain parts.

Notes:

  • While it might be tempting, you should avoid looking at the PathfinderWiki pages for Kintargo and Ravounel, as these contain quite a lot of spoilers for the adventure.
  • Similarly avoid the Second Edition book Lost Omens World Guide as it completely spoils major events of the Adventure Path.
  • First Edition setting books such as Nidal, Land of Shadows and Cheliax, The Infernal Empire.pdf are safer, but are also written in a much different, edgier style Pathfinder used to be known for. I will be redacting/homebrewing some of this 1st Edition lore, likely as we go on.
  • Hell’s Rebels Players Guide written for first Edition, is largely canon, I’ll only homebrew a few slight details. Sadly anything mechanics-wise from can’t be used.
  • As a rule of thumb you should treat the Lore I publish on this website as superceding official Paizo lore.

Setting Summarized

You are an inhabitant, or new arrival, in the city of Kintargo, nicknamed “The Silver City”. Kintargo is an old port and university town, renown for it’s temperate climate and lively art scene, and the capital of Ravounel. Ravounel is the northernmost province of the Devil-worshipping Empire of Cheliax. Which, for almost 8 decades now, has been ruled by the Thrune dynasty, who took control of the country after decades of civil war. To overcome all other pretenders, the then-ruler Abrogail Thrune the first, signed an Infernal pact with the god Asmodeus, selling her own soul, and all of Cheliax, in exchange for victory.

Kintargo, being at the furthest edge, and relatively isolated, has since become a quiet nursing ground for anti-authoritarian sentiment. With recent developments across the empire and rebellions springing up everywhere, the Thrunes have sent one of their own to crack down on any rebellious activity and keep the empire together. The new Lord-Mayor, Barzillai Thrune, an Asmodean inquisitor has carried this task out with relish.

As the story opens tensions are rising high in Kintargo, Barzillai Thrune has pronounced a series of increasingly nonsensical laws, and murdered or disappeared a large number of prominent citizens in a night of violent arrests and arsons. The party will be able to fill the vacuum this has created, and hopefully see the Silver City, and perhaps all of Ravounel, freed from the Infernal regime of Thrune.

I will publish more Elaborated text about Kintargo, Ravounel and the surrounding areas on this site, shortly.
